Hockey Academy is a skating enrichment program through the SFFSC. Athletes in this program will work with coaches each week on strengthening their skating skills as well as balance, on-ice agility, power, and speed to help them become stronger hockey players.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
Mini Hockey (Snowplow/Hockey 1) (Mini Atoms) (Specifically for 3 & 4 year olds)
- Learn to Skate USA Hockey Curriculum –
This class is designed for our youngest hockey players. Specifically designed for current players and future players ages 3 and 4.
Skaters in this class will use toys and other manipulatives to learn the very basics of skating.
Designed to help new young skaters gain skating skills and confidence needed to play youth hockey.
Hockey skates and helmet recommended. No other gear needed.
Target Class Ratio is 6 – 1
Beginner Hockey (Hockey 1) (Atoms)
- Learn to Skate USA Hockey Curriculum –
This class is designed for young and new hockey players. Target age
Athletes will focus on forward skating fundamentals. (forward gliding, on two feet and one foot, weight transfers and stops.)
Backward skating skills will also be introduced and practiced. (backward skating and gliding on two feet)
Hockey skates and helmet recommended. No other gear needed.
Target Class Ratio is 6 – 1
Basic Hockey (Hockey 2) (Atoms & Mites)
- Learn to Skate USA Hockey Curriculum –
This class is designed for young and new hockey players.
Athletes will focus on forward skating fundamentals. (forward gliding, on two feet and one foot, weight transfers and stops.)
Backward skating skills will also be a main focus of class instruction. (backward skating and gliding on two feet, backward stops, turning from forward to backward)
Hockey skates and helmet recommended. No other gear needed.
Target Class Ratio is 6 – 1
Intermediate Hockey (Hockey 3) (Atoms & Mites)
- Learn to Skate USA Hockey/USA Hockey Curriculum -
These skaters should have strong forward skating skills and be able to skate efficiently backward.
Athletes will focus on developing backward skating skills. (backward double c-cuts, backward crossovers, inside and outside edges, pivots, alternating directions, and stops.)
Hockey patterns and on-ice courses will be utilized to work on multiple skills.
Target class Ratio is 8 - 1
Pre-Advanced Hockey (Hockey 4) (Atoms & Mites)
- Learn to Skate USA Hockey/USA Hockey Curriculum -
These skaters should have strong and efficient forward and backward skating skills. Skaters should be able to perform snowplow and hockey stop both forward and backwards.
Athletes will focus on developing transitional skating skills and strong skating skills at full speed. (pivots, mohawk transitions)
Hockey patterns and on-ice courses will be utilized to work on multiple skills.
Target class Ratio is 8 - 1
Advanced Hockey (Mites & Above)
- USA Hockey Curriculum -
These skaters have strong and consistent forward and backward skating skills.
Athletes in this class will work on agility and precision with their forward and backward skating, multiple transitions from forward to backward, and other advanced skating skills.
Hockey patterns, stations, and on-ice courses will be utilized to work on multiple skills.
Target class Ratio is 8 - 1
High-Performance Hockey
- USA Hockey Curriculum -
These skaters have strong and reliable forward and backward skating skills and can consistently and fluently transition from forwards to backward as well as backwards to forwards. (required transitions: pivots, mohawks and 3turns)
Athletes in this class will work on consistency, accuracy, agility, and precision in using the advanced skating skills they have. This class is ideal for strong players and skaters who are looking for guided instruction and time to continue to practice and hone their strong skater skills through the use of isolation drills, hockey patterns, stations, and on-ice courses.
Target class Ratio is 6 - 1
Power Hockey (Intermediate Hockey Level and Above)
This class is designed for hockey players at the intermediate level and above.
Athletes in this class will work on speed, power, and endurance as well as agility while skating forward and backward. This is a fast-paced class used to get their heart rates up and keep them moving and sweating. The first week of the class is a timed skating obstacle course. The final week the athletes will run the course again to compare their start time and their end time.
Hockey patterns, stations, and on-ice courses will be utilized to work on multiple skills.
Target class Ratio is 12 - 1
Teen & Adult Hockey
Hockey skating skills class for teens & adults!
This class will be a slower-paced skating skills class.
Designed specifically for 18+ skaters/players who would like additional time and practice working on forward and backward skating, balance, edges, transitions and efficiency.
Hockey skates are required and Helmet is recommended but no other gear needed.
Stick and Structure (Hockey 3-4/Intermediate Hockey and Above)
This class is designed to focus on the structure and posture of Hockey skaters as they skate with and without a stick and puck. Classes will vary between specific stick skill exercises and balance/posture drills.
The class has a maximum class capacity of 6 skaters.
Hockey Skills Practice (All levels)
This is an open practice ice opportunity specifically for Hockey players. This is an opportunity for hockey skaters to get additional practice time, either independently or in conjunction with a private lesson coach. Pucks will only be allowed on the later practice session (unless used during a private lesson). Tennis balls will be available during the first practice session time in place of pucks.
